Perspective of an anonymous Japanese gamer

First of all, most Japanese people don't give a crap about political correctness. It doesn't mean we have no interest in it. Of course we want the world to be a better place. No war, no racism and no sexual harassments, that is a good thing. So we think political correctness isn't a bad thing.  However, we don't really need to be concerned about that even in games or other entertainments, do we? Do you think for yourselves while gaming, "hey there is a Asian man in this game, that is a good point because that's diverse"? No. We want a good game with a good story, good animations, good music, good dialogues and good characters. Not the diversity. I know the diversity in characters makes a good story. Unique and diverse characters will definitely make the story interesting, but the what's wrong is that the PC people are criticizing in lack of diversity, not the game itself. Maybe there is a game which is set in Europe which all the characters in the ga...

Perspective of C.H.S, a philosopher

I think it is great that the world of games is expanding and there are more women creating and playing games. However, things are getting little complexed here.  Video games were always a victim of controversial topic such as "video games will cause violence" concern. That concern was determined as a spurious correlation in many studies, but now there is a new problem; gender and race problems in games. Some critics are criticizing video games like " why isn't gaming more inclusive?", "why must always a male heroes?" and "why are female characters are portrayed as Damsels in distress or sex object in games?" and so on. Some evidences are trustworthy, but the actual video game world are becoming more inclusive than ever now. There are more female and colored skin characters as a main character in games.  Also, "the game is a male-culture"? "The games are made for men because the female characters are symbolized as a sexual cha...

Perspective of A.S, a feminist media critic

As you can see from the video, "Tropes vs Women In Video Games", I have analyzed how female characters have been treated in video games throughout the history. In part 1, I talked about the Damsel in Distress cliché, which is a plot of a female character being in danger and must be rescued by a hero.  This Damsel in Distress cliché is used in many famous video game franchises such as Mario and Zelda, but what's bad about Damsel in Distress trope is that it disempowers female characters and steal their heroic role. The good example is the Krystal from "Dinosaur Planet". Krystal is a female fox with a magical staff and she was designed as a playable protagonist character in the game "Dinosaur Planet". However, the game was never released and instead it was redesigned as one title of the "Starfox" franchise. In Starfox, Krystal was removed from her protagonist role and became a Damsel in Distress character. As you can see, female characters in...

Introduction to This Blog

In this blog, I will focus on the Political Correctness.  "The great game's sequel became one of the most controversial game in the history because of political correctness." This is the main reason why I became interested in this topic. I haven't thought much about political correctness issues until the game "The Last of Us Part 2" was released. "Last of Us Part 2", a sequel of a internationally popular game "The Last of Us", is one of the most controversial game ever released in the history. It received high scores from the critics but the user score was fairly low. This was because of the political correctness issues. "Last of Us Part 2" has political point of views such as LGBTQ and woman's rights and they heavily affected the game's story in a bad way. So, this blog will be focused on political correctness mainly in sub-cultures such as games and films. ※The political correctness here is used as a term of avoidan...
