Political correctness is used to criticize language that seems intended to give the least amount of offense when describing groups identified by external markers such as race, gender, culture, or sexual orientation. So these words are deeply involved with PC.
The term "Political Correctness" appeared in a U.S. Supreme Court decision about the boundaries of federal jurisdiction in 1793. It has been used to describe what is politically wise, and it has been employed as ironic self-mockery. However, leftists in the 1970s and 1980s used the term as self-critical, ironic satire. It used as a joke among leftists. Later, the term was started to be used as a criticism of New Left modern in the late 20th century and popularized by a number of articles in The New York Times and other media.
